Double Stops and Chords: from Beginner to Advanced

Taught by renowned cellist

tonebase Artists

In the course on double stops and chords, we learn about how to play more than one note at a time-- a task that can prove difficut for many cellists. Contrary to what some may be taught, we learn that right from the onset that students should play in double stops. We then explore double stops, harmony, and string crossings, chords, Bach, and balancing the voices, and finally, scales in double stops and repertoire application.

Course Syllabus

Scales in Double Stops and Repertoire Application

In this lesson, we learn about methods of practicing scales in double stops. We also study complex repertoire passages using double stops. In addition, we learn how the practice of certain études of Piatti, Popper, and others can help build finger strength. Professor Greensmith also places an emphasis on learning how to glide seamlessly through positions as we study the cello fingerboard.

Introducing Double Stops

In this lesson, Daniel Lelchuk introduces important concepts about cello double stops. We learn that we should not be afraid of double stops and should start playing them no matter how beginner or advanced we are at the cello. We study ways of practicing double stops, and Lelchuk shows us how to coordinate shifts with the bow and vibrato to make a seamless line.

Left Hand Strength via Rigorous Double Stops

In this lesson, we learn Johannes Moser's secret techniques for building a strong left hand through rigorous double stop work.

Double Stops, Harmony, and String Crossings

In this lesson, Jonah Kim takes us in depth into double stops and chords as they relate to string crossings and harmony. We learn how connected string crossings and double stops really are, and we learn to train our ear to pick out the right things at the right times.

Chords, Bach, and Balancing the Voices

In this lesson, Natalie Clein explains to us toe close relationship between double stops and string crossings. Using the prélude to the first Bach cello suite as a jumping off point, we get a tour of how to play double stops over the centuries of cello repertoire, from Bach to Haydn, Dvorak, Elgar, and into the 20th century. Clein places a special emphasis on the role of the right hand fingers and the arm creating a smooth ellipse.
