Course Syllabus
Adagio and Chamber Music
In this lesson, we learn how to make the most of the chamber music aspect of this great Adagio. We learn when to lead and when to follow the piano as the two have a crucial dialogue.
Allegro - How to Practice
In this lesson, we study methods for navigating the somewhat awkward passages in the Allegro of this piece. As Professor Claret states regarding shifting, "When you feel a musical motion, the shifting is often easier."
Vibrato Connections
In this lesson, we learn about the differences between continuous and connected vibrato. We study ways in which vibrato can help build the musical phrases and we learn practice methods to make application to the repertoire easier.
Legato and Natural Phrasing
In this lesson, we study methods for the bow to make as legato sound as possible. We learn how the pelvis must be engaged, rather than the shoulders, to really make sure the sound spin. We also hear anecdotes of Casals and Rostropovich to offer inspiration. We study ways of making various colors with the bow using more hair, more speed, and by varying other factors.
