Course Syllabus
I. Prelude, lento – Allegro maestoso
In this lesson, we study crucial practice aspects for the many technical challenges in this movement. We learn about timing in the opening recitative as well as how to pace the vibrato in the singing passages.
II. Intermezzo, andantino con moto – Allegro presto – Andantino – Tempo I
In this lesson, we learn about the distinct, contrasting moods of this movement, We learn about choosing fingerings and well as how to create a very light, airy sound with the bow. We also study the rhythmic features of the movement and learn how to create musical jewels and stardust effects to make the movement shine.
III. Introduction, andante – Allegro vivace
In this lesson, we learn about the importance of dramatic silences in music and how powerful they can be. We also learn about the style of the Iberian dance. Professor deMaine also shows many different ways of finding a range of bow strokes to produce the rich, powerful, biting cello tone that carries through the entire hall.
