Introduction

Cesar Franck has a very interesting history and connection with the flute and flutists in the time he lived. Marina Piccinini takes us on a journey through Franck’s life, the history of this sonata originally for violin, and gives perspective on how we can make this piece our own.

I. Allegretto ben moderato

Marina Piccinini talks us through practice strategies and pitfalls that we may fall into when practicing the first movement. She speaks about how the piano and the flute part weave together to create beautiful tone colors. She talks about how to achieve a beautiful legato and flexibility in the high register as well.

II. Allegro

There are many voices in this vibrant and exciting second movement to consider within the flute and the piano parts. Marina Piccinini talks through how to bring out these motives effectively, as well as a hidden motive found throughout the piece.

III. Ben moderato: Recitativo-Fantasia

Marina Piccinini guides us through this recitative movement and its unique themes, pauses, and imagery. She talks about where to use silence, and how to most effectively perform these cadenzas and recitatives.

IV. Allegretto poco mosso

The beautiful fourth movement of this work is filled with soaring melodies and impactful motives. Marina Piccinini guides us through this movement and talks about how to play these passages with optimum air support and fluidity. Her insights into how the flute and piano parts work together are imaginative and helps us to understand this piece even better.

Soft Dynamics

Marina Piccinini shares how she plays pianissimo in the middle and high registers so eleegantly. She talks about the physical aspect required to achieve elegant articulation and offers exercises to practice these skills.
