About

Wulfin Lieske

Wulfin Lieske (*6.3.1956 in Linz, Austria) is a German guitarist, composer and artistic mentor. He comes from a family of musicians (his father was a solo cellist at the Stuttgart State Opera, his mother a choir singer) and lives in Cologne. As a result of this he became familiar with classical music at a young age. He started playing the guitar at the age of 10. At the age of 14 he gave his first public concert in the Abbey on the Scottish island of Iona. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Cologne University of Music with Prof. Karl-Heinz Böttner and Prof. Hubert Käppel, and took master classes with Oscar Ghilia, José Tómàs and John Williams. Wulfin Lieske is a prize winner of the international guitar competitions in Alicante (Spain, 1981), Gargnano (Italy, 1982) and Almunecar (Spain, 1985).

At an early stage of his artistic career Wulfin Lieske explored the musical world beyond the classical guitar. He took lessons with Sigmund Nissel (Amadeus Quartet) and the violinist Rudolf Kolisch. The record production with the quartet EXTEMPORE ("Bitternis", 1979) and the work in the formation "Bronsky Ritual" are evidence of Lieske's inclination to devote himself to new and experimental music in addition to the classical repertoire. Since 1979 Wulfin Lieske has been performing internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Lieske has played with Gidon Kremer, Astor Piazzolla, Juan José Mosalini, the Hilliard Ensemble and the tenor Christoph Homberger, among others. In 2008 Lieske founded the "Lieske Spindler Guitar" duo together with Fabian Spindler and recorded several albums for Challenge Records.

From 1986-1992 Wulfin Lieske worked at the University for Music and Theatre in Hamburg. At present he teaches regular master classes as well offers artistic mentorship. In 1985 Wulfin Lieske played his first solo album (Intercord/EMI classics) with his own transcriptions of Bach's Violin Sonata in A minor and Schubert's Moments musicaux. Since then he has released more than 20 albums on various labels and streaming platforms. His productions with historical original instruments from Petitjeune (ca. 1810) to Santos Hernandez (1935) have been special focus. Prominent among these recordings are those in which he played the guitars produced by Antonio de Torres. For three decades Wulfin Lieske has been playing the guitar "La Leona" (The Lioness) built by Antonio de Torres in 1856.

In 2005 "El Canto de La Leona" was released, a CD portrait and at the same time a first recording of Antonio de Torres' most famous guitar. Numerous live performances with "La Leona" as well as CD recordings with other instruments by Torres and other Spanish guitar builders of the 19th and early 20th century contributed significantly to the revival of the traditionally built Spanish concert guitar. Lieske's repertoire covers the great epochs of Western music from the ricercari of the Italian Renaissance master Francesco da Milano to the music of our time and his own works.

Lieske's own oeuvre encompasses all genres of piano, guitar, chamber music, songs, choir and orchestra. A special focus is his Symphonic Concerti in which the soloist is integrated into a through composed symphonic context (Dreamtime for Didgeridoo, Guitar and Orchestra 2013, Angel's Ride for Clavinet and Orchestra 2014, Resurrection for Violen and Orchestra 2015, Farewell Elegy for Cello and Orchestra 2016, Hemiphéres for Piano and Orchestra 2018). In 2019 Wulfin Lieske composed two major works for guitar - the stage music The Magic Four and The Arpeggio Experience, a set of 12 concert studies.
