On Melody
Taught by renowned guitarist
Stephanie Jones
In this lesson, Stephanie Jones shows you a five-step process for mastering your melodies. Taking advantage of the guitar’s unique potential to play very expressively, Stephanie plays two excerpts and shares what she does to add character and life.

The guitar is a melodic instrument by design. One hand creates the sound while the other changes the pitch. In contrast, on the piano both hands create the sound at the same time. This limits the pianist’s ability to change the color of the sound created. The guitar is special, since the spot on the string that you place your right-hand fingers drastically changes the color of the sound. As a result, guitarists have the responsibility to practice effects like tone color, vibrato, and rubato.

From highlighting to singing, each step of Stephanie’s process hopes to strengthen your melodic playing with any piece you’re learning!
