Etude No. 3 – Touches bloquées
Acclaimed pianist and contemporary music specialist Imri Talgam breaks down the compositional and technical innovations in György Ligeti's Touches bloquées, the third of six studies in his Book I of Études.
The piece's title refers to the "blocked keys" held by the left hand, which cause rhythmic irregularities in the overlapping right-hand line. Short motivic cells generate the larger form, which can be challenging to control. Talgam offers insights and practice tips for each obstacle, and reveals the humor in the music. Although not as famous as his other Études in many ways this is Ligeti's funniest and most original of the Book I!
