About This Lesson

Scott Tennant discusses the importance of maintaining proper balance between the melody and accompaniment when interpreting a piece. Using Fernando Sor’s Study No. 5 and Spanish Romance, Tennant demonstrates how to adjust the volume of the lower accompaniment to create a sense of sustain and to maintain the rhythmic pulse.

Later, Tennant uses Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Prelude No. 1 to demonstrate the same principles but with the melody in the thumb.
