Binary Form

Join Dominic Cheli as he breaks down binary form, a fundamental two-part structure found in Baroque dance music, folk tunes, and early sonatas. With clear musical examples, Cheli shows how binary form establishes contrast and balance through repeated A and B sections—laying the groundwork for more complex forms like the sonata. A must-know for understanding the building blocks of Western musical form.

Ternary Form

Join Dominic Cheli for a clear and engaging exploration of ternary form—one of the most enduring structures in Western music. Through iconic examples like Chopin’s Nocturnes and Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Cheli illustrates how composers use this ABA format to create contrast and resolution within a single piece. You'll learn why ternary form remains a favorite across styles, from classical to jazz.

Rondo Form

In this lesson, Dominic Cheli breaks down rondo form—a playful and engaging musical structure where a main theme keeps returning between contrasting sections. With examples from Mozart’s Rondo alla Turca and Beethoven’s Für Elise, Cheli shows how composers use repetition and variation to create excitement and cohesion. A favorite for final movements, rondo form is a masterclass in balancing familiarity with surprise.

Scherzo / Minuet & Trio

Dominic Cheli unpacks the transformation of dance forms in Classical and Romantic music, from the courtly grace of the minuet and trio to the bold energy of the scherzo. Learn how composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin used triple meter, contrast, and humor to structure third movements—and how these forms evolved into expressive showpieces. With historical context and vivid excerpts, this lesson brings Classical rhythm and form to life.

Theme & Variation

In this lesson, Dominic Cheli explores theme and variation—a musical form where a single melody is continuously reinvented through changes in rhythm, harmony, texture, and style. From Mozart’s playful Twinkle variations to Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations, Cheli demonstrates how this structure balances familiarity and surprise, making it a powerful tool for expression across genres and centuries.

Fugue

In this deep dive, Dominic Cheli explores the fugue—one of the most intricate and expressive forms in classical music. Learn how a single theme weaves through multiple voices in imitation, variation, and transformation, from Bach’s elegant counterpoint to Beethoven’s stormy expansions. With clear structure, rich techniques like inversion and stretto, and modern examples, this lesson offers a compelling look at the enduring art of the fugue.
